We are just about done with St. John’s Lutheran Church in Forest, WI.  Brad is very proud of this one with good reason.  The steeple is roofed with Gerard’s Granite Ridge shingle,  and the main body of the church is Gerard’s Canyon Shake.DSCN0786

Beat The Rush!!! Order your new roof now!!!

Posted by Derrick Hansen in Company NewsSaving Money

We had a lot of orders going into this winter and due to the bitter cold and snowfall totals that look like Mount Baker in WA State, we have had a hard time getting them done.  Early Spring is the best time to get an estimate,  have a look at colors and styles and get a spot on the schedule.

More than likely this season is going to be very busy for roofing contractors.  Homeowners that never had ice dams before found that even newer, modern insulated and ventilated homes still had ice dams due to the wild weather we suffered thru in the historic winter of 2013-2014.  With all the roof snow removal and ice dam removal it is safe to say that those with asphalt shingle roofs are going to suffer a lot of damage.  When roofing contractors get further and further booked out, the laws of supply and demand kick in and you can expect the price to go up.  By getting your project and contractor selected and scheduled early in the spring, you can save money and get problems with your roof fixed before they turn into bigger problems with interior damage.

Call Bjorkstrand Metal Roofing now to schedule your free, no obligation estimate with Bruce or myself and we will come out and show you the difference a new stone-coated metal roof can make to both the performance and curb appeal of your home.

Questions about your metal roof!

Bruce BjorkstrandMetal Roofing FAQs

What is your product made of?

  • 26 gauge, galvalume
  • Coated with an acrylic basecoat
  • Embedded with ceramic earth-stone granules
  • Over-coated with a clear acrylic over-glaze and baked on

Can I walk on the roof tiles?
Yes. Though no roof is designed for pedestrian traffic. Caution should be taken not to walk on the rib portions, but to do so on the front edges; otherwise you may walk on your new Gerard roof with ease.

How heavy is a Gerard Roof?
Gerard roofs weigh only 110 lbs. per square for the battenless style. They weigh 115 lbs. less than inexpensive composition shingles, and are far more durable.

How noisy is a Gerard roof?
Due to the patented interlocking design, insulated dead-air space under the roof, and the earth-stone granule finish, Gerard roofs are very quiet. It is NOT like a shed, remember you have insulation in the attic and sheetrock.

Do I have to tear off my existing roof?
No. With Gerard roofs you may leave your old roof on as Gerard has been tested and approved to be installed directly over your existing roof due to its unique installation method. You should check with your local city however, as each city has different ordinances.

What is the warranty on Gerard roofs?
All the roofs we install have a 10 year labor warranty from us. Gerard has a lifetime warranty for materials and labor. It is the strongest warranty in the stone coated metal roof industry.

Won’t Gerard roofs make my home hotter?
Again, due to the insulated “dead-air” space, there is no heat gain. Much like dual-pane windows, the design actually works as an energy-saving barrier. With our Gerard roof you will save on your energy costs. Many other companies take short cuts, we don’t and never will.

Will heat and cold make a Gerard roof contract and expand?
There is minimal movement with Gerard roofs due to the fully interlocking profile when affixed to the roof deck. Also, the rough granule finish and angular design add to restricting movement.

Will I have to re-structure my home?
No. Because of its light weight, Gerard roofs require no sub-structure reinforcement.

What fire rating does Gerard roofs have?
Depending on sub-roofs and underlayment, Gerard offers a Class A, B, or C installation. (ICBO and UL reports are available upon request).

Will my Gerard roof be safe from lightening?
Fear of lightening is not a concern, as through the installation, the steel roof is grounded to existing pipe vents.

Will the exposed fasteners rust or come loose?
Because the ring shank nails which are used for fastening are specially coated and installed at an angle to the roof deck, they won’t rust or come loose in bad weather. They are designed to work with this roof. There is nothing left to chance. The roof is tested to over 170 mph with out a failure.

How long has Gerard roofs been around?
Gerard roofs have been used in over 30 countries around the world for more than 55 years, and have beautifully withstood all weather climates.

Will the coating ever crack, chip or peel?
With Gerard’s superior technology in acrylic resins and curing process, we guarantee that your Gerard roof will last as it has lasted all over the world.

Will the value of my home increase if I install a Gerard roof?
Yes. Gerard not only offers you security and peace-of-mind with the last roof you will ever need, it also will enhance the beauty and help increase the value of your home. Gerard roof warranties are transferable. Unlike our competition they have you send in a form when you sell and only have a twenty year warranty and then it depreciates the remaining 30 years.

Does hail cause any damage to a Gerard roof?
Gerard roofs have been tested around the world with “flying colors” results in resisting hail, rain, snow, and ice. (reports of test are available upon request).

Will I save on my energy bills?
You should see a noticeable reduction in your energy bills. Because of the Gerard system design, temperatures in the attic can be 30 to 40 degrees cooler.

Why are metal roofs safer in tornados?
They’re much lighter. Gerard is about 1/2 the weight of a shingle roof installation. So, during a tornado, a metal roof actually adds strength to your structure. It provides twice the shear strength of 1/2 CDX plywood. Gerard roofing is call structural steel because it ties pieces of plywood together on your complete roof.

Why is wind resistance so important? High winds will cause most roofing to blow off. Gerard’s secured with 5 – 8d ring-shank nails in the front nose and installed horizontally for the best wind resistance.

How long will a metal roof last?
It could easily outlast your home!!

Where are Gerard roofs made?
Gerard roofs are manufactured in California.  Gerard roofs are made with 100% American materials and labor. Our manufacturing plants are located inSouthern California.

Will my homeowner’s insurance premium be reduced if I install a Gerard roof?
Discounts are offered by many insurance companies. They all have different policies and it is best if you call them and compare.

What about Colors?
Gerard specializes in lots of beautiful colors that will enhance your curb appeal. Earth stone granules reflect light so you can expect your roof to be extremely good looking.

Can you really improve the look of my home? YES! We can totally change your homes curb appeal for the better. Not just a new look, but an amazing transformation. We will work with you until you get the right style and color. But one word of warning! Expect your neighbors to be jealous!

Are your prices really better? Yes! Many Synthetic products and premium asphalt/composition roofs are more expensive. Even other steel roof companies are more expensive. We do not buy any of our roofs from a roof supplier. We buy from the factory. There is no middleman to add to the cost.

We buy direct from the factory here in the USA. No foreign companies! In fact each roof is specially made for your home. Compared to a common asphalt/composition roof from a qualified roofing company we are very close in price. Surprised? Asphalt/composition roofs are oil based and have risen in price so fast that prices have gone up by the month. This is a NO BRAINER! Do you want a roof that fails after a storm? That you will constantly have to evaluate the condition?

We believe a roof should be done only ONCE! When we do your roof we begin with that simple philosophy. We never want you to be concerned again with the condition of your roof. We like our customers, but unless you add an addition you will never see us again.

Florida Home Magazine Gerard Stone-Coated Steel Roofing Metal Roofing Press Release

Extreme hurricane season predicted. Be ready with a Gerard stone coated steel roof. The best way to protect your home is by investing in a superior roofing system!  Gerard’s stone coated steel is the most hurricane safe roof on the market. They have been tested with 170 mph winds with no damage. Every year they are put to the test weathering hurricanes and tropical storms, and they continue to outperform every other roofing material.

With the dire prediction of an intense hurricane season, and in today’s economy, it is extremely important to receive the utmost value for every dollar you spend. Today more than ever, you want the money you spend on your home to stretch as far as possible, and the most financially sound improvement you can make is investing in a Gerard stone coated steel roofing system. The best way to protect your home is by investing in a superior roofing system.

Gerard’s stone coated steel provides more value and benefits than any other roofing material, yet it is made to resemble other materials, so you get a beautiful roof with many more advantages. At only 1.4 lbs. per square foot, a Gerard stone coated steel roofing system is considered—no, Gerard IS “lightweight.” Concrete and clay roofs can weigh up to 15 lbs. per square foot! In fact, it is even lighter than all asphalt roof shingles. A concrete roof is susceptible to cracks, and while its underlayment may be waterproof, concrete is porous which will lead to leaks as the roof ages. A Gerard stone coated steel roof is water tight because of its innovative fastening system.

An asphalt roof is relatively inexpensive, but it can be considered a “disposable” roof because it is likely to fail much sooner than you would expect, so you waste any money you saved up front. A painted steel roof is susceptible to fading, and the outdated wood shake has been proven insufficient for fire and severe weather protection.

Gerard’s stone coated steel is fire safe. Unlike most other roofing systems, stone coated steel will not allow flying hot burning embers to get between the deck and roof panels, and steel does not burn. Few images are more dramatic than the one on the right where entire neighborhoods are almost wiped out with only select homes still standing—homes with stone coated steel roofs.

Environmental concerns play a big part in today’s home improvements. LEED™ (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and Energy Star qualification are given for using eco-friendly, or “green,” products and practices. By using over 30% recycled materials and other sustainable products, Gerard’s stone coated steel roofing systems qualify for both. In addition, the steel is 100% recyclable and packaging and other materials are purchased from vendors who recycle.

Heat transfer is another very important factor. Independent testing has shown that a stone coated roofing system can reduce heat transfer by as much as 45% over conventional asphalt roofing. There are two factors for this huge difference. Gerard uses granite stone which by nature is UV reflective. Gerard also has certain colors that are more reflective than others. The reflectivity of the stone only accounts for a small portion of the energy savings. Gerard roofing systems have air space between the roofing deck and the stone coated roofing panel. The system is designed as a cool roofing system, allowing air to push the heat, therefore not allowing heat transfer like a hot asphalt roof which lays flat against the roofing deck. More air space between the deck and panel keeps the attic area much cooler, thereby reducing the need for air conditioning.

By investing in a superior roof now, when the economy improves and you want to sell, you’ll be one step ahead of everyone else. With its unbeatable return on investment, longevity, energy efficiency and the fact that it is eco-friendly, choosing a stone coated steel roofing system is the best choice. You may even qualify for insurance benefits with lower premiums. Talk to your insurance provider to see what they offer.

Factory Certified Installers…

Posted by Derrick Hansen in Company NewsRoofing News

Metals USA / Gerard Roofing Technologies provides its contractors with an excellent factory training program.  Myself, Bruce, and two of our newer employees just got back from the Metals USA warehouse facility in Kansas City where Bruce and myself took a refresher coarse and our two new employees received their certification to install Gerard Stone-coated Steel Roofing. Metal Roofing Training Picture Tile, Shingle, Shake Rob Anderson, the technical services representative for Gerard,  was a pleasure to work with and great trainer.  The certification program provides our installers with every possible scenario that they will encounter out in the field.  Weather it’s a dormer, skylight, hog valley, pitch change, reverse pitch change, valley detail, sidewall and roof to wall detail, hip and ridge detail,  Rob showed us the factory approved method to apply ALL the various Gerard products in these areas.  Granite Ridge Stone-coated Steel Roofing Training Roof Valley Detail

In addition to the factory approved methods of installation, Rob has accumulated the experience and knowledge from ALL the certified contractors nation-wide.  It’s all the ‘little tricks of the trade’,  that Rob has accumulated over the years that make this training program so effective.  The old saying in our industry is “A roof is only as good as the installer”.  This is particularly important with stone-coated steel roofing as it is far more difficult to install than asphalt shingles.Metal Roofing accessories flashings

On the Job…

Here at Bjorkstrands we are very proud of our crew and their dedication to quality and customer service.  Here are a few photos from the jobsite showing a Gerard Canyon Shake installation on this beautiful half-log sided home, garage, and lakeside cantina in the Long Lake area near Birchwood:

In this photo we are installing Ice and Water Shield underlayment along the rake edge where we have removed the asphalt shingles back to fit our rake channel flashing.  The end result is a nice, clean stone-coated steel rake edge flush with your current D-edge flashing:In this photo,  we use a large shear,  much like a large paper cutter, to make our cuts,  the use of this tool “pinches” the acrylic coating of the shake so as not to leave exposed steel.  This helps prevent corrosion on the cut end:This photo shows our metal brake.  We can custom bend just about any type of flashing on-site.  No matter what unusual situation your home presents,  we can make flashing, rake channel or counter flashings on site.Stay tuned folks, we are currently putting together a “Before and After” photography project that shows the amazing difference a Bjorkstrand Metal Roof can make to the curb appeal of your home!

Today’s Metal Roofing: Truly Authentic Appearance

Posted by Derrick Hansen in Company News

Wouldn’t it be great if your roof looked just like a clay tile roof or a cedar shake roof without all the maintenance, repairs, fire hazard, weight, tile breakage, high life cycle cost and the probability you will have to replace that roof some day?  Well, take a look at these before and after photos of one of our more known re-roofing projects in the Barron, WI area:

Before:

 After:

Before:

After:

Most folks from Barron, WI that I have talked to, never thought that this clay barrel tile roof was ever replaced!!!  When we arrived, the tile was broken,  there were several leaks in the roof, and a small flat roof at the very top of the roof was giving the owners a real headache.  Gerard’s “Barrel Vault” was a perfect choice to keep the Mediterranean style look to this unique home.

We eliminated the flat roof by framing and completing the hip roof to a peak, removed all the old clay tile and hot asphalt roof underlayment,  and solved the problems for this home-owner for a lifetime.  Normally we don’t see these Mediterranean style homes in our area of Northwest Wisconsin,  and normally we don’t install the tile options that Gerard carries,  however, Gerard’s Canyon Shake and Granite Ridge are a great fit for Wisconsin’s Northwood’s look!

We have lists of hundreds of homes for you to look at near you!  Contact us today for your free, no obligation in-home estimate.  We have full sized samples that we can put up on your roof for you to stand back and see what it will ACTUALLY look like.  Many of our competitors will attempt to scan the product over a picture of your home using various software,  rarely, if ever, does this make an accurate representation of color and the actual end result.  Like the inaccuracy of using a paint swatch,  it is best to see an actual sample.  After all,  this is the LAST roof you will ever need!
