Gordon Wildfire….

Posted by Derrick Hansen in Roofing News

Our thoughts and prayers go out for the victims of the Gordon wildfire last week. Thank goodness no one was hurt in the largest forest fire to hit northern Wisconsin in 33 years.  The fire, which began Tuesday the 14th, destroyed 17 homes and 30 other structures.

In addition to the loss of these homes and structures,  the Gordon area is one of northwest Wisconsin’s most beautiful areas and a popular vacation area.  Wildfires like this one are rare in our area but considering fire-resistant exteriors for your home is always a good idea no matter what part of the country you live in.

Our Stone-Coated Steel Roofing carries a class A fire rating,  the very best in the industry.  One of the best examples of Gerard’s superior resistance to fire is the 1983 Oakland, CA neighborhood Fires.  The only homes that survived the fires had Gerard Steel Roofing installed.

In addition to the Oakland, CA fire,  the 2003 San Diego, CA fire is another good example.  Take a look at Bob and Micheline Gerson’s story from this 1999 Atlanta Fire:

Bob Gerson is certain that his Gerard Stone Coated Steel Roof saved his historic home. He told every TV crew and newspaper reporter the same thing. The four-alarm fire started in #34 and burned it to the ground, spread to #38 (next door – the house where PRINCE OF TIDES was written) and seriously damaged it before fire crews brought the fire under control. Their actions and his Gerard Stone Coated Steel Roof were able to stop the spread. Despite the intense heat from the fire next door, just feet from Gerson’s home, his house suffered little damage. The fire tried to enter through the soffit under the eaves, a common entry point for fire. The Gerard Stone Coated Steel Roof denied the fire any access. Apart from scorched paint and some burn marks under the eaves, the house was undamaged. Two subsequent rainstorms proved Mr. Gerson’s written assertion that the Gerard Roof had saved his home. No water entered the attic.
We all hope that fires like the Gordon, WI wildfire last week never happen close to our homes but with a Bjorkstrand Metal Roof, you can sleep easier knowing you have superior protection from fire.  Call for your free estimate today,  we are booking up fast,  reserve your spot on the calendar to get the LAST ROOF YOU WILL EVER NEED!

Galvalume: Proven performance…

Posted by Derrick Hansen in Roofing News

One of the many reasons our stone-coated steel roofing is guaranteed to last is because it is made out of GALVALUME treated steel.  GALVALUME sheet steel is a 55% Al-Zn coated sheet steel product that is ideally suited for most types of roofing and siding applications as well as unexposed automotive parts, appliances and miscellaneous applications like furniture, outdoor cabinetry, computer cases, gutters, pipe, etc.  Since 1972, over *100 million tons of licensed product has been produced globally.  GALVALUME sheet steel continues to gain approval by specifiers, architects, building owners and many others due to its versatility, ease of use, aesthetics and long-term performance.

The combination of Aluminum and Zinc give GALVALUME treated steel its proven ability to resist corrosion.  I was asked recently,  “should I consider an aluminum roof so it doesn’t rust?”  I answered, “no,  you will just be giving up strength,  aluminum will dent VERY easily, weather it be from foot traffic or a hail storm.”  In addition to no real advantage of using aluminum roofing for corrosion resistance,  the cost is much higher.

Hail Damaged Aluminum Roofing:

So metal roofing has changed since the days of grandpa’s old rusted out tin roof on the barn.  You can enjoy all the benefits and strength of steel roofing and rest assured that your metal roof will not rust and last a lifetime.  Give us a call today to schedule your free in-home estimate and we will show you the difference Gerard’s Stone-Coated Steel Roofing installed by Bjorkstrand’s can make on your next re-roofing project AND your LAST re-roofing project!

How to Pick Your Next Roof Installer!

How to pick your Metal roof installer!

We realize that we at Bjorkstrand Metal Roofing are not the only metal roofing company in the area BUT we are the only ones dedicated to stone-coated metal roofing ONLY.  You will be in your home for many years to come so you are on the right path with your choice of metal roofing over asphalt shingles again. Why make the same mistake twice; you know the saying “fool me once shame on you fool me twice shame on me.

Please consider the following of every roofer you get an estimate from.

  1. Are they a Licensed Roofing Contractor?  Our license in Wisconsin #1114840. This is important because Wisconsin law requires it to install roofing. There are two licenses you need one for the company the other for a qualified person (1114841 is mine) . Get their license #number so you can check with the state.

Look for companies that install metal roofing only!

  1. How long has the company been in business and for how many years have they been installing metal roofing? This is important for stability and their knowledge of metal roofing. There are a lot of companies that install asphalt and are very good at it. They will try to talk you into an asphalt roof by giving you a huge $ price on metal roofing and a much more reasonable price for asphalt, hoping you select the latter.
  2. Get a list of the metal roofs they have completed. This is important because it shows the level of experience they have in the trade. A good metal roofing company should have well over one hundred installations completed.
  3. Now get some names and addresses so you can drive by some of the homes. Take a look at the color of the roof; note the style of the roof panel itself and also the type of home it is installed on. See if you can take some photos and check them out at arms length at your home. Then get samples.
  4. Make sure the companies you get bids from are insured. We are fully insured which means we not only have $2,000,000 in liability insurance but we also have the workers compensation insurance on all of our employees. Our insurance company is Big Rivers in Menomonie. We do not use subcontractors that may or may not be supervised on the job, do they? How about subcontractors workers compensation  insurance and liability?
  5. We have an owner installing our product on your roof and he works with the employees on every job. Brad has been installing metal roofs for over six years and has installed over 200 and counting. Brad is very focused on his attention to detail and your complete satisfaction.
  6. We will give you a 10 year warranty on our workmanship to supplement the 50-year Non-Prorated product warranty. We only install Gerard metal roofing because of that warranty. So if something does happen, we will take care of it, promptly, free of charge. All other stone coated roofing companies warranties depreciate after 20 years.
  7. We are a family business and we have been around since 1960 with fathers/sons working side by side.  So we are not going anywhere soon.
  8. We are the only metal roofing company that is certified to install Gerard Metal Roofing in Northwest Wisconsin.  You can be assured that your project will not be a learning experience.  Many of our competitors are just starting to install metal roofing as asphalt shingles become increasingly expensive and metal roofing becomes increasingly more popular. Are they certified? Ask to see their certification.                                                    Did you hear of any of them before you heard of us? Enough said!

How to buy Metal Roofing for your home.

How to buy Metal Roofing for your home.

As homeowners have become more aware of the benefits of metal roofing its’ popularity has soared. During the past decade Bjorkstrand Metal Roofing has installed more than 1300 Gerard metal shingle roofs, mostly the Canyon Shake style. Every year we install more than the year before. We now install more than 125 metal roofs per year because this is all we do. We don’t do doors, windows, asphalt shingles, siding or decks like other roofing companies.

GERARD Metal Roofing products are all we do and we do them well!

Gerard Canyon Shake

Gerard Canyon Shake Metal Roof installed by Bjorkstrand Metal Roofing!

Metal roofing no longer looks like “barn tin” as our grand-parents use to say, it now comes with a granular surface. We call these styles stone-coated metal roofing. Each panel is stamped out of a Galvalume roll of 26 gauge steel. The steel is then coated with corrosion inhibitors, epoxy primers and other protective layers to provide a permanent metal roofing product. The stone chips are attached to the steel with an acrylic film that is very tough. The final product is about the same thing as Rhino liner  in a pickup bed. The goal is a more durable roof that still retains the aesthetic advantages of a more traditional roofing material so you “look” like you belong in your Eau Claire neighborhood. Metal roofing of today will not crack or rust and is durable, fire resistant and lightweight. We only install Gerard Metal roofing because it has the best warranty in the business and enhances the looks your home. Gerard Metal roofing will give you a lasting beauty that tenaciously resists the harmful effects of the sun, wind, rain, 2.5” hail and Wisconsin snows. Gerard metal roofing installed by Bjorkstrand Metal Roofing will last you a lifetime. Gerard Metal Roofing has a 50-year non pro rated and transferable warranty; like I said the best warranty in the business.

Now that you know about Bjorkstrand Metal Roofing and the Gerard metal roofs we install, I will tell you about our competition.  I am not here to bad mouth any company just the different products they install. Our direct competition is with other stone coated metal roof installers . Their warranties are not as strong as Gerard’s and they all pro-rate in 20 years after being installed, with declining coverage for the remaining 30 years. Some have a twenty five year warranty on their granules these also pro rates after 20 years. These are called a 50-year transferable warranty, so they can confuse you. They may look like Gerard’s Canyon Shake but they don’t stand up warranty wise and no other installer In Eau Claire has the experience that the Bjorkstrand Metal Roofing crew has, none.

Most roofing companies install asphalt shingles and then offer metal as a sideline. They will install painted steel in one of two types, standing seam (raised rib) with no fasteners exposed or pole barn type (exposed fasteners)

Figure 2: Standing Seam (No exposed fasteners)

Standing Seam (no exposed fasteners) That couldn’t take the wind.

Classic rib (Exposed Fasteners)

Both of these types of metal roofs have limitations as far as warranty on the paint and snow slide. These are selected as to your personal taste or budget. You may want the snow to slide off your roof; well both of these will allow that. Just remember when the snow slides it goes fast and you do not want to be anywhere near the area when it does. You will have to also install snow guards to mitigate the slide in these areas. It is best to have a house where the doors are NOT under the eaves. Sliding snow when it hits the ground will become an iceberg by the time you get home from work. Now how would you like to shovel that mess when you get home? Winter is already a lot of work I do not need more. Gerard Stone coated metal roofing will not allow the snow to slide.

Raised Seam or Standing Seam metal as in figure 2 has no exposed fasteners and is typically a 24ga metal with a Kynar 500®  paint.  You can also buy a cheaper 26 ga raised rib panel as well but the paint warranty is usually not as strong as the 24 ga. The paint warranty on the Raised Rib 24 ga is typically better than the Classic Rib.

Raised Seam panels come in different widths 12”, 16” and 24”. It runs full length eave to peaks with hidden fasteners. Now there are usually two types of this style metal roofing Snap Loc  and Standing Seam

Raised seam is popular for industrial applications such as schools, banks and government buildings. Now it does have a large following in the heavy snow states like in the mountains, the Upper Peninsula, on log homes and inFlorida. Most homes in residential areas do not install this type of metal roofing because the owners do not want to standout that much from the rest of the neighborhood. These are usually more expensive because there are not that many installers around that like to use it and most are of the 24 ga so the metal itself is more.

Classic Rib is an agricultural panel known as pole barn steel. Now it works great in the country on pole barns because it is relatively cheap to buy and install. It is 3’ wide and runs eave to peak in length and has exposed fasteners. This is installed on homes as well but as it expands and contacts on a daily basis it puts an egg shape hole around the screw until it leaks 5-10 years after being installed. People have it installed because it is the cheapest metal to have put on your home. They have the right idea to have a metal roof but they went for the perceived value and it is not there. Pole barn steel leaks as I have always said “it is not bad if you have a leak on your tractor seat but you wouldn’t want one on your loveseat”.

Lastly, there is a good reason why exposed fastener roofing is called “Barn Steel” roofing.  It is intended to be installed on a barn roof – not your home!

Here is a chart of the change over time on Kynar 500® paint. They typically have a warranty that the paint will not change over 7 Hunter units; notice the numbers on the side A7 is the 30 year mark. Remember the Gerard warranty is 50 years non pro-rated. If you wanted the red on the left it looks like you will end up with mauve over time. Here is the link to the PDF if you want to see it bigger.

You now have a working knowledge of the different metal roof offerings that are installed the most.

Insurance Experts Conjure an Indoor Hailstorm, Destruction Ensues…

Posted by Derrick Hansen in Roofing News

I love controlled, documented tests like this one that the  Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) conducted recently.  However,  I was disappointed to see that they did NOT test Stone-Coated Steel Roofing!  Perhaps they only wanted to test materials that would be damaged to collect the data.  Hopefully next time they will put Gerard’s steel roofing against asphalt shingles and vertical seam steel roofing.  Gerard’s Stone-Coated Steel roofing is warrantied to 2 1/2 inch hail!  As we covered in our late March article “Save on your home-owners insurance with stone-coated steel roofing“,  steel shingles and shakes hold up better than vertical seam steel roofing due to the bends in the sheet-metal.  Perhaps next time the IBHS will test a few other kinds of roofing materials so we can get the whole picture.

Tests like this are very interesting, and do tell insurance companies what they need to charge for protection with various materials in hail-prone areas. Other interesting tests include Air-vent Incorporated’s attic ventilation test and Underwriter Laboratories’ class 4, (UL 2218) hail impact test.   Hail resistance is important in our area and insurance companies recognize that.  As the map below shows,  we are a prime target for damaging hail storms like the Rice Lake Hail storm of 2010. Many insurance companies offer our customers a discount on their annual premiums when changing from an asphalt shingle roof to our stone-coated steel roofing.  Ask myself or Bruce about these discounts or contact your insurance agent for information on “Reduction in Residential Premiums”. Here’s a sample Form from State Farm.

Made to last…

Our Gerard stone-coated steel roofing is made to last and here’s the proof!

Some of our competitors are spreading false claims that stone-coated steel roofing looses its crushed rock granules when there is no evidence of that at all.  Perhaps that was true in the 1950’s when the crushed rock was bonded to the steel with hot asphalt,  but today it is bonded to the steel with an acrylic adhesive,  baked in an oven, and a UV resistant over-glaze is applied after that.  Gerard has perfected the manufacturing process and offers a superior warranty against granular loss compared to our competitors. In addition to superior manufacturing,  here are some other reasons to consider a Gerard metal roof installed by Bjorkstrands:

1. Steel is lightweight – good for liability, structural and earthquake reasons.

2. It has been proven over 40 years and has virtually no problems.

3. It is fireproof – Class A, B or C rating.

4. It withstands 120mph winds.

5. Gerard’s warranty is the strongest on the market.

6. It can be walked on without cracking.

7. It withstands hail without denting or breaking.

8. It is proven in snow and ice conditions.

9. A large established company backs the warranty (Metals USA is the parent company with $2 billion in sales).

10. Color does not change from batch to batch or over time.

11. It is aesthetically very pleasing looking like shingle or shake.

What you need to know about Asphalt Shingle Warranties

Posted by Derrick Hansen in Roofing News

On occasion we will bid on churches and large buildings with an asphalt shingle as an option if they cannot afford our metal roofing.  I was surprised to see recently that manufactures are now offering “Lifetime Limited Warranties” on what was recently called a 30 year shingle!  That 30 year shingle back in 1999 was called a 25 year shingle.  Years before that,  a higher quality shingle was called a 15 year shingle.  The history of asphalt shingles is a long one and recently, a history of deception.

Most consumers wonder how manufacturers are able to avoid the financial liability for providing warranties that are DECADES LONGER than the known, and documented, lifespan of the shingles.  Manufacturers can, and do, market asphalt shingles with unrealistic warranties because:

a) What accountability is there?  Most homeowners will NOT risk $100,000 in legal costs – to enforce warranty coverage on a $15,000 roof.

b) Class Action Lawsuits on asphalt shingles did not begin until the late 1990’s.  And, to date, asphalt shingle class action lawsuits have proven to be very inefficient in bringing reform – paying pennies on the dollar.

c) Generally speaking, all the premature failures related to the natural “aging” of fiberglass asphalt shingles are NOT guaranteed as part of the specific “Limited” warranty coverage.

In a nutshell, there are only 2 categories of roofing materials,  “Permanent” and “Temporary” materials.  Most asphalt shingle manufacture’s warranties are a small book of fine print.  We used to joke around on the crew back in the old days installing asphalt shingles with 1 1/4″ hand nails: “I’d hate to be the roofer to tear this roof off!”  Hard to imagine that some young men have already had to do just that!

Take a moment to have a look at our warranty page.  You will not only see the amazing difference between our metal roofing and an asphalt shingle warranty,  you will also see the difference between Gerard’s warranty and our stone-coated steel competitors warranty!

Petroleum and Storm Related Roofing Expenses Bring Shingle Prices Up

Posted by Derrick Hansen in Roofing NewsSaving Money

Jim Stickland of Atlanta Action 2 news reported last week the headline, “Prices are going through the roof!” and he’s right. There has been a massive price increase that took place on March 1, 2013 for asphalt shingles. It is also reported that the prices will increase again on April 15, 2013. A bundle of shingles will now cost….a bundle! Shingle manufacturers are shipping more shingles to areas in the Hurricane Sandy areas which is leaving a smaller supply in the south and other regions.

The market leader Owens Corning has raised prices by double digits. This price increase has a big affect on everyone because it trickles down to the homeowners who have to pay more for their insurance premiums. So, even if you don’t need a new roof or roof repairs, you can still be affected.

In addition to asphalt shingle prices going up due to it being a petroleum based product, It has already been reported that Allstate went up 9.9% in April of last year and State Farm has reported a 7% increase in insurance premiums. Storm-related roofing expenses are a major reason for this change.

“The more this damage occurs, the more the insurance companies are laying out. They have to maintain their financial stability as well,” said Dave Colmans of the Georgia Insurance Information Service.

What does this mean for a homeowner in general? Stone-coated steel shingles should be considered for your next roofing or re-roofing project. The durability, the 50-year non-prorated warranty, 2 1/2″ Hail warranty, as well as possible insurance discounts mean Stone-coated steel roofing is superior. It is the most cost-effective way to protect your biggest investment.
