Engineered for Re-Roofing…

Posted by Derrick Hansen in Roofing NewsSaving Money

One of the best features of Gerard Stone-Coated Steel Roofing is that it was engineered for re-roofing.  It is lightweight, only 1.3 lbs. per sq. foot, and will not add any significant weight to the structure. It is only 1/3 the weight of asphalt shingles.  It will not conform to an uneven surface below it, and can be installed to “encase” the old roof.  This allows for installation over an asphalt shingle roof without the need to tear-off the old roof in most cases.

Who wants this mess?

Removing the old asphalt shingle roof is necessary if your re-roofing with an asphalt shingle.  Asphalt shingle warranties state clearly: “Must be applied over a smooth flat surface”.  An asphalt shingle will conform to the uneven surface of an existing asphalt shingle roof.

The shingle will be much more susceptible to cracking,  blowing off, and premature failure.  Our metal shakes and shingles do NOT conform to the irregular surface of an asphalt shingle roof and in fact, it can hide imperfections in the roof deck, existing roof and roof framing.

Asphalt Shingles,  (being a petroleum based building material), are rising in cost rapidly.  That, combined with the high cost of labor and disposal fees of tearing-off an existing asphalt roof,  the cost of installing a lifetime metal roof has become a lot more comparable to re-roofing with an asphalt shingle.  In addition,  consider these statistics on asphalt shingles:

  • 12 million tons created annually
  • 11 million tons post consumer tear-off debris
  • 1 million tons of manufacturing waste
  • contractors spend $1billion yearly in waste hauling and disposal fees
  • clogs landfills, utilizing over 4% of all space
  • requires several generations to decompose

The age of temporary roof systems is coming to an end.  Life Cycle Cost, No Mess, No Crushed Flowers and Landscaping, No Disposal Fees, No Additional Tear-off Labor, and NO need to Re-roof every 10-15 years are just a few reasons to consider a Stone-Coated Steel Roof from Bjorkstrand Metal Roofing.  Beat the fall rush and schedule a free in-home appointment today!

Is your Air Conditioner running too much?

Consider a Bjorkstrand Metal Roof to help reduce your energy costs!  More and more, homeowners are seeking out energy-saving building materials for their renovations and new homes, products that not only secure and improve structures but also provide long-term cost-cutting on energy bills while promoting environmental and economic sustainability in the greater community.

Among the array of possible upgrades, “cool metal roofing” easily answers this consumer demand offering a solid, attractive roofing solution available in multiple colors, textures, and profiles, for steep-slope and low-slope applications, that can  save your household up to 40% of its annual energy costs, depending on your geographical region.

The Benefits of Energy Efficient Metal Roofing:

As reported by the Cool Metal Roofing Coalition and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, installation of reflective metal roofing can save your home up to 40% in summer cooling energy costs while highly emissive metal roofs can reduce urban air temperatures by as much as 12 ° F. Combined, these benefits mean less money out of your wallet, less dependence on energy resources and less general air pollution in your neighborhood and across the nation.

The secret to metal roofing’s energy savings is in its variety of finishes. As shown above, the basic, unpainted metal roof will reflect much of the solar radiation usually absorbed in your attic and home by an asphalt roof. But, for homes in warmer climates, pre-painted or granular coated metal roofing systems not only reflect solar energy but also cool your home by re-emitting most of what solar radiation is absorbed.  Where annual cooling loads dominate, a highly reflective and highly emissive painted or granular-coated metal roof is optimal for reducing energy consumption and can actually re-emit up to 90% of absorbed solar radiation.

Additionally, most metal roofing, including stone-coated metal roofing, is composed of recycled material and can be installed directly onto an existing asphalt roof, reducing landfill waste and promoting quick installation as well as decades of environmentally-sound, maintenance-free strength and beauty.

So you need to replace your roof…

So you need to replace your roof…

If you ever needed your roof replaced you know how hard it is to hire a roofing contractor.  How do you know if they are “worth their salt”? To find a reliable metal or steel roofing contractor you REALY need to do some homework and do some checking of their references. Metal roofing is a specialty that most roofers or companies do not want to take the time to learn how to install it right. So what do they do? They send out their asphalt crew to see if they can install it while looking at a book of instructions.

The best way that I have found is to ask your friends, neighbors or coworkers who they used to have their metal roof installed. You may try the contractors you have used in the past and you liked their work. They will not want to give you any names unless they know they are good because the last thing they want is their name tied to a bad contractor. In my 38 years in the roofing business and the last 15 years as owner of Bjorkstrand Metal Roofing I have seen it all, from shoddy craftsmanship to illegal workers. I will reiterate and caution consumers to do their homework when hiring someone for home services such as roofing, particularly metal roofing. Most homeowners would not be able to inspect the work firsthand when the work is complete and should not get up on the roof anyway. Use binoculars from the ground to inspect the best you can. If you must get a closer look set up a ladder and then bring your binoculars with you, DO NOT GET ON THE ROOF.

You do not want to do this again. So I would say get a metal roof with a 50-year, non pro-rated and transferable warranty. Isn’t that why you are on our website www.metalroofingandexteriors.com?  So give us a call for a FREE quote on your project. Derrick or I will stop by your home with samples and more literature for you. We will give you a price on your metal roof and answer any questions you may have. Most homeowners have never had a roof replaced before so they are not sure of how to pick a roofer other than are they cheep.

What’s available in the marketplace, pricing, do you want a shingle or metal roof replacement, what quality is available and are the warranties worth anything. These are some of the questions we will answer for you when we meet you at your home. So fill out the form on this site for a FREE estimate and please look at the photos of completed metal roofs. The entire site is built for you and we try to answer all of your questions, have fun surfing.

The Truth about Storm Chasers…

Posted by Derrick Hansen in Roofing News

Storm chasers are companies that follow severe weather from area to area, completing home repairs (generally roofs and siding) that are damaged by hail and wind. They collect homeowners’ insurance claim checks in payment for their services, complete the work (often shoddily) before moving on to the next storm ravaged area. Here in Northwest Wisconsin, we are prone to hailstorms, and storm chasers generally quickly follow any such event. They generally go door-to-door in storm damaged areas, and may advertise themselves as insurance recovery experts or specialists in insurance restoration. (The term “Storm Chaser” can also be used to describe a person who follows storms in order to research, photograph, or simply experience a weather phenomenon. This type of storm chaser is entirely different and is not of any concern to a homeowner!)The first step of a storm chaser is to ask the homeowner to sign a contract allowing their company to negotiate  with homeowner’s insurance company.  By  signing these documents, homeowners may be waiving their right to any decision  making regarding their repairs or replacement. They also lose control over the insurance settlement, and the entire check of the payment may legally need to be signed over to the storm chaser- regardless of the quality or quantity of work completed. The homeowner may lose some control over materials used, leaving the storm chaser free to cut corners in order to increase their profit. Most importantly, warranty repairs can be very difficult to obtain as most storm chasers leave the area as soon as the storm “plays out.” These companies are generally gone long before warranty issues arise.  The company is certainly not going to return from Florida or Ohio to repair a problem with their work. To make matters even more difficult, some storm chasers lease local company names so the appear to be local. Once they complete their work in the area, they leave. The local company is then responsible for the warranty work. Of course, the volume of warranty work is often so great the local company ends up out of business, leaving the homeowner with problemsBeware of Hail Chasers!!!The chasers know how the insurance companies work, and based on the square footage of the roof, they can figure out how much it will cost to put on a cheap new roof. The homeowner gets burned because the storm chaser only does the bare minimum to replace the roof, but doesn’t address any other problems, or restore the roof to its original condition. The homeowner is then left with a poorly constructed roof, and the fraudulent company that was once so ready to help has vanished.Fly by Knight Roofing

So if a storm hits your neighborhood, avoid these types of companies and consider a permanent roof like Gerard’s Stone-Coated Steel Roofing.  Our lifetime roofing may qualify you for an insurance discount and keep the storm chasers away the next time a bad hail storm visits your neighborhood!

Factory Certified Installers…

Metals USA / Gerard Roofing Technologies provides its contractors with an excellent factory training program.  Myself, Bruce, and two of our newer employees just got back from the Metals USA warehouse facility in Kansas City where Bruce and myself took a refresher coarse and our two new employees received their certification to install Gerard Stone-coated Steel Roofing. Metal Roofing Training Picture Tile, Shingle, Shake Rob Anderson, the technical services representative for Gerard,  was a pleasure to work with and great trainer.  The certification program provides our installers with every possible scenario that they will encounter out in the field.  Weather it’s a dormer, skylight, hog valley, pitch change, reverse pitch change, valley detail, sidewall and roof to wall detail, hip and ridge detail,  Rob showed us the factory approved method to apply ALL the various Gerard products in these areas.  Granite Ridge Stone-coated Steel Roofing Training Roof Valley Detail

In addition to the factory approved methods of installation, Rob has accumulated the experience and knowledge from ALL the certified contractors nation-wide.  It’s all the ‘little tricks of the trade’,  that Rob has accumulated over the years that make this training program so effective.  The old saying in our industry is “A roof is only as good as the installer”.  This is particularly important with stone-coated steel roofing as it is far more difficult to install than asphalt shingles.Metal Roofing accessories flashings

On the Job…

Here at Bjorkstrands we are very proud of our crew and their dedication to quality and customer service.  Here are a few photos from the jobsite showing a Gerard Canyon Shake installation on this beautiful half-log sided home, garage, and lakeside cantina in the Long Lake area near Birchwood:

In this photo we are installing Ice and Water Shield underlayment along the rake edge where we have removed the asphalt shingles back to fit our rake channel flashing.  The end result is a nice, clean stone-coated steel rake edge flush with your current D-edge flashing:In this photo,  we use a large shear,  much like a large paper cutter, to make our cuts,  the use of this tool “pinches” the acrylic coating of the shake so as not to leave exposed steel.  This helps prevent corrosion on the cut end:This photo shows our metal brake.  We can custom bend just about any type of flashing on-site.  No matter what unusual situation your home presents,  we can make flashing, rake channel or counter flashings on site.Stay tuned folks, we are currently putting together a “Before and After” photography project that shows the amazing difference a Bjorkstrand Metal Roof can make to the curb appeal of your home!

Growing in popularity…

Posted by Derrick Hansen in Roofing NewsSaving Money

The majority of our clients are folks that are replacing an asphalt shingle roof.  Many of them are frustrated because they expected their asphalt shingle roof to last longer.  As the price of asphalt shingles rise,  and the quality of the shingle goes down,  metal roofing is seeing a dramatic increase in market share.Based on survey results from McGraw-Hill Construction and Analytics®, metal roofing has made a significant climb in the residential roofing market, including both new construction and home remodeling projects.  With an overall market share of 11% in the re-roofing segment, metal roofing is gaining quickly on competitors’ products. Metal roofs protect homes from extreme weather events with durable, attractive solutions. In the smaller new construction market, metal now accounts for 5.5% of all roofing.

Survey of Homeowner’s reasons for choosing metal roofing:

The McGraw-Hill Construction and Analytics® survey also projected that demand for metal roofing would increase to 1.4 million squares for new construction in 2009 and 13.4 million squares for repair and remodeling. (Note: a square is 100 square feet of roof area).  When asked to describe the reason they selected metal roofing, 61 percent of homeowners reported choosing metal roofing for its longevity, while 16 percent stated strength and protection. Other reasons stated: metal is a good investment, a metal roof adds value and is an environmentally friendly product.

If your considering re-roofing your home,  compare the life cycle cost, (average cost to own and maintain your roof per square per year), between steel roofing and asphalt petroleum based roofing.  You will be amazed at how much spending a little more now will save you 10-15 years down the road.  Weather you live in Rice Lake, Bloomer, Eau Claire, Hayward, Spooner, Menomonie, Hudson, Cumberland, Turtle Lake or St. Croix Falls we can deliver the Last Roof you will Ever Need!

Gordon Wildfire….

Posted by Derrick Hansen in Roofing News

Our thoughts and prayers go out for the victims of the Gordon wildfire last week. Thank goodness no one was hurt in the largest forest fire to hit northern Wisconsin in 33 years.  The fire, which began Tuesday the 14th, destroyed 17 homes and 30 other structures.

In addition to the loss of these homes and structures,  the Gordon area is one of northwest Wisconsin’s most beautiful areas and a popular vacation area.  Wildfires like this one are rare in our area but considering fire-resistant exteriors for your home is always a good idea no matter what part of the country you live in.

Our Stone-Coated Steel Roofing carries a class A fire rating,  the very best in the industry.  One of the best examples of Gerard’s superior resistance to fire is the 1983 Oakland, CA neighborhood Fires.  The only homes that survived the fires had Gerard Steel Roofing installed.

In addition to the Oakland, CA fire,  the 2003 San Diego, CA fire is another good example.  Take a look at Bob and Micheline Gerson’s story from this 1999 Atlanta Fire:

Bob Gerson is certain that his Gerard Stone Coated Steel Roof saved his historic home. He told every TV crew and newspaper reporter the same thing. The four-alarm fire started in #34 and burned it to the ground, spread to #38 (next door – the house where PRINCE OF TIDES was written) and seriously damaged it before fire crews brought the fire under control. Their actions and his Gerard Stone Coated Steel Roof were able to stop the spread. Despite the intense heat from the fire next door, just feet from Gerson’s home, his house suffered little damage. The fire tried to enter through the soffit under the eaves, a common entry point for fire. The Gerard Stone Coated Steel Roof denied the fire any access. Apart from scorched paint and some burn marks under the eaves, the house was undamaged. Two subsequent rainstorms proved Mr. Gerson’s written assertion that the Gerard Roof had saved his home. No water entered the attic.
We all hope that fires like the Gordon, WI wildfire last week never happen close to our homes but with a Bjorkstrand Metal Roof, you can sleep easier knowing you have superior protection from fire.  Call for your free estimate today,  we are booking up fast,  reserve your spot on the calendar to get the LAST ROOF YOU WILL EVER NEED!

Galvalume: Proven performance…

Posted by Derrick Hansen in Roofing News

One of the many reasons our stone-coated steel roofing is guaranteed to last is because it is made out of GALVALUME treated steel.  GALVALUME sheet steel is a 55% Al-Zn coated sheet steel product that is ideally suited for most types of roofing and siding applications as well as unexposed automotive parts, appliances and miscellaneous applications like furniture, outdoor cabinetry, computer cases, gutters, pipe, etc.  Since 1972, over *100 million tons of licensed product has been produced globally.  GALVALUME sheet steel continues to gain approval by specifiers, architects, building owners and many others due to its versatility, ease of use, aesthetics and long-term performance.

The combination of Aluminum and Zinc give GALVALUME treated steel its proven ability to resist corrosion.  I was asked recently,  “should I consider an aluminum roof so it doesn’t rust?”  I answered, “no,  you will just be giving up strength,  aluminum will dent VERY easily, weather it be from foot traffic or a hail storm.”  In addition to no real advantage of using aluminum roofing for corrosion resistance,  the cost is much higher.

Hail Damaged Aluminum Roofing:

So metal roofing has changed since the days of grandpa’s old rusted out tin roof on the barn.  You can enjoy all the benefits and strength of steel roofing and rest assured that your metal roof will not rust and last a lifetime.  Give us a call today to schedule your free in-home estimate and we will show you the difference Gerard’s Stone-Coated Steel Roofing installed by Bjorkstrand’s can make on your next re-roofing project AND your LAST re-roofing project!

How to buy Metal Roofing for your home.

How to buy Metal Roofing for your home.

As homeowners have become more aware of the benefits of metal roofing its’ popularity has soared. During the past decade Bjorkstrand Metal Roofing has installed more than 1300 Gerard metal shingle roofs, mostly the Canyon Shake style. Every year we install more than the year before. We now install more than 125 metal roofs per year because this is all we do. We don’t do doors, windows, asphalt shingles, siding or decks like other roofing companies.

GERARD Metal Roofing products are all we do and we do them well!

Gerard Canyon Shake

Gerard Canyon Shake Metal Roof installed by Bjorkstrand Metal Roofing!

Metal roofing no longer looks like “barn tin” as our grand-parents use to say, it now comes with a granular surface. We call these styles stone-coated metal roofing. Each panel is stamped out of a Galvalume roll of 26 gauge steel. The steel is then coated with corrosion inhibitors, epoxy primers and other protective layers to provide a permanent metal roofing product. The stone chips are attached to the steel with an acrylic film that is very tough. The final product is about the same thing as Rhino liner  in a pickup bed. The goal is a more durable roof that still retains the aesthetic advantages of a more traditional roofing material so you “look” like you belong in your Eau Claire neighborhood. Metal roofing of today will not crack or rust and is durable, fire resistant and lightweight. We only install Gerard Metal roofing because it has the best warranty in the business and enhances the looks your home. Gerard Metal roofing will give you a lasting beauty that tenaciously resists the harmful effects of the sun, wind, rain, 2.5” hail and Wisconsin snows. Gerard metal roofing installed by Bjorkstrand Metal Roofing will last you a lifetime. Gerard Metal Roofing has a 50-year non pro rated and transferable warranty; like I said the best warranty in the business.

Now that you know about Bjorkstrand Metal Roofing and the Gerard metal roofs we install, I will tell you about our competition.  I am not here to bad mouth any company just the different products they install. Our direct competition is with other stone coated metal roof installers . Their warranties are not as strong as Gerard’s and they all pro-rate in 20 years after being installed, with declining coverage for the remaining 30 years. Some have a twenty five year warranty on their granules these also pro rates after 20 years. These are called a 50-year transferable warranty, so they can confuse you. They may look like Gerard’s Canyon Shake but they don’t stand up warranty wise and no other installer In Eau Claire has the experience that the Bjorkstrand Metal Roofing crew has, none.

Most roofing companies install asphalt shingles and then offer metal as a sideline. They will install painted steel in one of two types, standing seam (raised rib) with no fasteners exposed or pole barn type (exposed fasteners)

Figure 2: Standing Seam (No exposed fasteners)

Standing Seam (no exposed fasteners) That couldn’t take the wind.

Classic rib (Exposed Fasteners)

Both of these types of metal roofs have limitations as far as warranty on the paint and snow slide. These are selected as to your personal taste or budget. You may want the snow to slide off your roof; well both of these will allow that. Just remember when the snow slides it goes fast and you do not want to be anywhere near the area when it does. You will have to also install snow guards to mitigate the slide in these areas. It is best to have a house where the doors are NOT under the eaves. Sliding snow when it hits the ground will become an iceberg by the time you get home from work. Now how would you like to shovel that mess when you get home? Winter is already a lot of work I do not need more. Gerard Stone coated metal roofing will not allow the snow to slide.

Raised Seam or Standing Seam metal as in figure 2 has no exposed fasteners and is typically a 24ga metal with a Kynar 500®  paint.  You can also buy a cheaper 26 ga raised rib panel as well but the paint warranty is usually not as strong as the 24 ga. The paint warranty on the Raised Rib 24 ga is typically better than the Classic Rib.

Raised Seam panels come in different widths 12”, 16” and 24”. It runs full length eave to peaks with hidden fasteners. Now there are usually two types of this style metal roofing Snap Loc  and Standing Seam

Raised seam is popular for industrial applications such as schools, banks and government buildings. Now it does have a large following in the heavy snow states like in the mountains, the Upper Peninsula, on log homes and inFlorida. Most homes in residential areas do not install this type of metal roofing because the owners do not want to standout that much from the rest of the neighborhood. These are usually more expensive because there are not that many installers around that like to use it and most are of the 24 ga so the metal itself is more.

Classic Rib is an agricultural panel known as pole barn steel. Now it works great in the country on pole barns because it is relatively cheap to buy and install. It is 3’ wide and runs eave to peak in length and has exposed fasteners. This is installed on homes as well but as it expands and contacts on a daily basis it puts an egg shape hole around the screw until it leaks 5-10 years after being installed. People have it installed because it is the cheapest metal to have put on your home. They have the right idea to have a metal roof but they went for the perceived value and it is not there. Pole barn steel leaks as I have always said “it is not bad if you have a leak on your tractor seat but you wouldn’t want one on your loveseat”.

Lastly, there is a good reason why exposed fastener roofing is called “Barn Steel” roofing.  It is intended to be installed on a barn roof – not your home!

Here is a chart of the change over time on Kynar 500® paint. They typically have a warranty that the paint will not change over 7 Hunter units; notice the numbers on the side A7 is the 30 year mark. Remember the Gerard warranty is 50 years non pro-rated. If you wanted the red on the left it looks like you will end up with mauve over time. Here is the link to the PDF if you want to see it bigger.

You now have a working knowledge of the different metal roof offerings that are installed the most.
